Description
Quoys is a mid-19th century group of traditional Orcadian farm buildings that have undergone later alterations. The buildings are single storey and arranged in three parallel ranges with narrow closses between them, oriented along a north-south axis. The central range features a two-bay cottage, built on sloping ground that falls to the south, along with two lower single-bay stores attached to the north. To the east, there is a single-bay store or byre, which has a lower single-bay store abutting it. The western range consists of three additional single-bay sheds or byres, with two of them abutting to the north. There are also further derelict buildings located to the south, also aligned on the north-south axis, which straddle a former burn. The structures are constructed from roughly coursed rubble.
The cottage range has a deep-set boarded door in the central bay of the east elevation, with a wide-set window in the left bay. To the right, there is a deep-set door in the store bay, and another doorway in the lower bay to the outer right. The west elevation features a centered window with an additional window to the outer left of the cottage, while the stores abutting have blank rear elevations. On the south elevation, there is a window set to the left, with a gablehead stack above.
The east range has a deep-set door to the right on the west elevation, along with a centered deep-set door to the lower store on the left. The east elevation is blank, and the south elevation features a window set to the right with a gablehead stack above.
In the west range, the east elevation has a centered stable door in the byre at the center, and a centered door in the abutting byre to the right (north). The north elevation has a boarded door set to the left of the byre to the south.
The cottage features 6-pane timber sash and case windows. The cottage roof is made of corrugated iron with a concrete ridge and coped skews, while the rubble corniced gablehead stacks are present. The other roofs are made of flagstone, with some turf on the west range, and the east range has rubble corniced stacks.
The interiors were largely not seen during the last inspection in 1998, but exposed rafters and tie beams were noted in the west byres, along with flagstone divisions for animal stalls.
