Scarrataing, Graemsay

Scarrataing is a mid-19th century cottage that has undergone some later alterations. It is a single-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan building with a square-plan entrance porch. The exterior is made of coursed rubble, while the porch is constructed of concrete. To the east of the main cottage, there are derelict rubble farm buildings.

On the principal elevation facing east, there is a window in the porch located in the central bay, with a window on the left side and a doorway on the right side leading to the main cottage, which features a deep-set, boarded door. Each bay flanking the porch also has a window.

The rear elevation to the west has a window set to the outer left. The south side elevation has a window on the left, with a gablehead stack above it. The north side elevation is blank, but it shows the concavity of a former kiln.

The windows are fixed 4-pane, timber-framed, and there are timber-framed windows in the porch as well. The roof is a turf-over-flagstone design, and the porch is roofless. The gablehead stacks are made of rubble and have cornices.

Inside, the cottage has a fine and relatively unaltered interior, featuring flagstone floors, original fire surrounds, and an intact box bed in the central dividing wall and the north wall, which has folding timber panelled doors.
