Hoy, Lyness, South West Of Ore Farm, Former Munitions Depot

The former munitions depot at Hoy, Lyness, was built by the Ministry of Supply around 1938. It consists of four rectangular-plan ammunition stores. Each building features an inner shuttered concrete structure with a buttressed outer concrete baffle wall, complemented by an earthen mound for additional baffling. Large concrete curbs extend from the openings of the stores, and the roofs have a low gradient pitch.

Each gable end has double steel doors and small ventilators, facing the large concrete kerbs at the entrances. On either side of these kerbs are small concrete platforms designed for transferring shells and fuses between vehicles and the store. Metal barred gates are positioned in front of the steel doors. The roofs have a very low pitch and include a central row of ventilators.

The interiors of the stores were accessed in 2013 through two doorways in the main gable end. Concrete piers support the roof over various rooms within. Metal rolling racks are still in place, where ammunition would have been transported in wooden trays. Several steel doors remain, and the original room layout is intact.
