Description
Moncur Memorial Church, a Church of Scotland, was designed by Leslie Grahame MacDougall and built between 1953 and 1955. This tall cruciform church is located in a prominent position and features a raised chancel and lower transepts, with round arched openings and shouldered gables. The exterior is constructed of harled masonry, with some reinforced concrete, and has a red sandstone basecourse, projecting cills, and an eaves course. The nave elevations have a pair of buttresses on the north and south sides, which are capped with red sandstone flags. The entrance is located in a gabled porch at the southwest corner, and there is a Dutch-gabled bellcote on the south transept. A memorial plaque is situated on the west elevation below a tall narrow window. There is also an L-plan church hall wing, built around 1900, attached to the north side.
The church features small-pane glazing set in fixed and top hopper lights, with a grey slate roof, red sandstone skews, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, the church has a plain yet distinguished interior, highlighted by an open timber king-post roof structure supported by red sandstone corbels. The nave has tall and narrow round arched windows, with paired small clerestory windows in the chancel. At the crossing, there is a central communion table flanked by a pulpit and lectern. The interior is adorned with distinctive 1950s light fittings and a timber memorial plaque on the west elevation. A stained glass window in the chancel depicts The Good Shepherd, created by Marjory Kemp of Edinburgh, and there is stained glass border glazing in the nave windows.
