Description
Christ Church Dunollie, located on Corran Esplanade in Oban, was designed by Leslie Grahame MacDougall and completed in 1957. The church features five bays, a nave, shallow side aisles, and apses at both the east and west ends. At the west end of the south aisle, there is a square tower. Each bay has a single lancet-style window, with a rectangular clerestory window above, framed by narrow concrete margins. The building has a black brick base course beneath its rendered and painted walls.
The tower includes lancet windows at the midpoint, paired windows in the upper stage of the belfry, and a door at the ground floor. It is topped with a concrete cornice that has a tall octagonal copper lantern on a bell-cast roof, supported by eight columns beneath a pyramidal roof and cross.
Inside, the bays are divided by concrete structural members, featuring a central triangular arch and shallow outer arches that create the aisles. The interior decoration from the period remains intact. The west apse contains elders' pews on a timber platform accessed by seven steps, along with a timber pulpit, canopy, and lectern that showcase contemporary carving and ironwork. The east apse houses a white marble war memorial that has been relocated from a previous church. There are lobbies to the north and south, each with a curving concrete stair leading to a room above, illuminated by small square windows. The entrance features two-leaf doors with eight panels and contemporary external lamps above the lintels. A stained glass window in the center of the west apse depicts the life of Christ and was gifted in memory of the architect by his sister. All other windows are square-paned leaded lights. The building also features a moulded eaves course, profiled gutters with square downpipes, and a copper roof.
