Description
This is an 18th-century single-span road bridge, known as Putlock Bridge, which crossed the Red Burn. The bridge features a depressed arch and was formerly used for road traffic. It is constructed of tooled and margined sandstone ashlar, although the stone is collapsing in places to reveal a rubble core. Circular holes, known as putlock holes, are visible at the springing point of the intrados. Originally, the bridge had no parapet, and remnants of the road's substructure remain on the approaches. The bridge is located close to the Castlecary railway viaduct and was in a dilapidated condition, having ceased to function as a road bridge by 1994.
