Description

Cambusnethan Parish Church is a rectangular-plan ruinous church dating from around 1650, aligned east-west. It features a birdcage belfry on the west gable, but the roof and east gable head are missing. An 18th century addition is located to the northeast, and the building is constructed from squared and snecked yellow sandstone rubble.

On the south elevation, there is an off-centre right lancet arch entrance with a bead moulded architrave inscribed: "WITHOUT HOLINESS NO MAN??ETH THE LORD." The entrance has half-height pillars in the reveals, a base, foliate capitals, and a cavetto hood mould with mask stops. To the right, a blocked square-headed doorway has a lintel inscribed: "ALMY VAIN THOWTS STAY YE HEER BECAWS MY GOD I DO DRAW NEER 1672." There is also a pedimented plaque to the right in memory of David Leighton, the Coltness estate factor, from 1815. The upper courses of this elevation are in a ruinous state.

The north elevation features an advanced wing to the right, which is the 18th century addition with squared and tooled sandstone courses, a cornice, and two architraved niches on the right return. The right side has a blank rubble nave wall.

The east gable elevation has later slapping with rubble infill and is missing its gable. The west gable elevation is a blank full-height gable wall with saw tooth coped skews. The birdcage belfry has square fluted pillars, an entablature, swept pyramidal caps, ball finials, and a pyramidal canopy with a ball finial.

Inside, there is a full-length yellow sandstone gothic memorial to the Houldsworth family set in the east gable, dating from 1853. It features six bays with trefoliated lancet arches, red sandstone cluster columns, decorative carving to the spandrels, an inscribed entablature, and recessed niches with marble inscribed panels. The roof structure is missing.

The boundary wall is a low rubble wall with chamfered ashlar coping and square gate piers topped with jettied pyramidal caps. A 19th century decorative cast-iron gate is present, although the railings have been removed.
