Description
Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church and Presbytery, located on Ellisland Road in Cumbernauld, was built in 1964 by the architectural firm Gillespie, Kidd and Coia. The church features red-brown rendered brick, originally finished with cream render, and has a concealed roof. The building is set on a slope with rounded corners at the south. A projecting entrance bay is located at the north, and the east and west walls are adorned with rhythmic lights of varying heights, separated by concrete mullions of unequal widths. The window heads have a corbel effect, and the SALLE DE VERRE coloured glass by Sadie McLellan illustrates the stations of the cross.
Inside, the altar is positioned in one corner on a dais, with the roof above it lit. A choir gallery is situated in the opposite corner above the entrance, and the interior is finished in rough plaster. At the rear, there is a hall that adjoins the church, featuring a concealed roof and rendered walls, with the upper part in buff and the lower part in brown pink. There are entrances on the east and south sides, with the southern entrance accessed by a railed stair.
The presbytery is attached to the southwest of the church and is built on a slope, appearing as two stories at the front and three at the rear. It shares a similar two-colour treatment and concealed roof, with irregular strip glazing and raised triangular light hoods like those of the hall. The original glazing has been replaced with UPVC. There is an integral garage to the west with a balcony above. At the rear of the hall, there is a courtyard featuring a chequered pattern made of grey and brown bricks, along with concrete slabs, some of which have been replaced. The interior of the presbytery was not seen.
