Description

Glendower House is a late 19th-century villa located at 5 Montgomerie Terrace, Skelmorlie, along with associated gatepiers. The property comprises a two-story main building, a three-story square tower to the south, and a low, single-story wing with a basement beyond.

The house is constructed from coursed and stugged red ashlar with polished dressings. The tower has a bipartite design on three of its upper stages and features a round-headed doorway with a round-arched opening. A canted ground floor window sits alongside. The west elevation is plain with a projecting bay on the left. The east elevation features a wide segmental-arched ground floor window and a keystoned, round-arched central stair window, where the cill breaks the continuous band between the floors. The house has an eaves course, bracketed eaves, wallhead stacks, and a slate roof, with the tower mirroring this treatment.

Inside, the leaded glass stair window depicts the Battle of Largs. Decorative cast-iron stair balusters are present, alongside a low, depressed-arched screen, incorporating a short square Corinthian column and pilasters, separating the half-landing from a ground floor room to the northeast. Remaining features include some wooden panelling and decorative plasterwork.

Red ashlar gatepiers mark the entrance to the east and west; the eastern piers are square, while the western piers are octagonal with shaped caps. A decorative wooden gate, featuring stylized wooden columns, completes the entrance feature. The property was formerly known as Alipore.
