Description

Skelmorlie Parish Church is a Gothic church completed in 1895, designed by John Honeyman of Glasgow. Located in Skelmorlie, it is accompanied by a three-bay hall, which was the original church built in 1855-1856. The church is constructed from snecked and stugged red sandstone ashlar, with polished dressings; the hall is a cherry-caulked red rubble. A prominent feature is the three-stage square tower with a spire to the north, which includes a two-cusped-headed entrance under a wide, moulded arch with nook-shafts. The tower's upper stage has louvred and plate-traceried belfry openings, a parapet with diminutive pinnacles, and a faceted spire topped with a finial and lucarne.

The nave has five buttressed bays with geometric-traceried windows, stepped and gabletted buttresses, and a continuous string at cill level. The chancel to the south has three lancets with a continuous hood-mould high on the east and west walls, stylised beak-head moulding at the eaves of the west wall, and three tall, slender lights below a vescica in the south gable. A vestry is located at the south east corner. The hall has a porch in the north bay and a belfry over a three-light window on the north gable; a modern addition is on the north east. All roofs are slated.

The interior boasts fittings largely by Honeyman & Keppie. A single side aisle is present on the east side, featuring an elaborately carved and panelled oak pulpit (1899), choir stalls, altar, dado, and reredos. The reredos includes four figures under ornate canopies, separating three carved panels signed J Crawford (1897). Notable stained glass windows are present; the chancel windows were designed by J & W Guthrie (David Gauld, artist) between 1895 and 1896. Further west wall windows include one by Stephen Adam (c.1909) and two by the firm of Wm Morris (c.1900 and 1918, the latter based on designs by Burne-Jones). An Inverclyde window is believed to be by Clayton & Bell, and two additional war memorial windows, originally from St Andrew’s Church in Greenock, were acquired in 1970 and fixed to the north wall, backlit. Art Nouveau detailing is present in the hall's pulpit, stair balusters, newel posts, and in the wrought-iron lamp outside the principal entrance. The organ, installed in 1904 by Binns of Bramley, Leeds, was built to specifications from Herbert Walton of Glasgow Cathedral, and is set behind a low quadrant wall with wrought-iron gates and railings. The church remains in ecclesiastical use.

The original church's architect is unrecorded, but a transept (replaced by the tower) was added in 1858 by "Mr Clark, architect". The chancel west window was donated in memory of John Honeyman's wife and sons. A plaque inside the chancel identifies the architect.
