Description

This is a mid-18th century building on The Cross in Beith, with significant alterations made later and a restoration completed in 2003. It is a curved, two-storey and attic building. The front has a central door flanked by two larger openings, a door to the right side, and two first-floor windows. There is also one window in the central wallhead gable. The exterior is harled with exposed sandstone margins and a continuous cill course for the attic windows; stone quoins are visible on the right side.

The windows are timber sash and case windows with four panes of glass. The roof is covered in grey slates and features an end stack with circular clay cans.

The interior was refurbished in 2003, and no original features remain.

The building was formerly the home of the Reverend John Witherspoon, who later became a signatory of the American Declaration of Independence and founding Principal of Princeton College. It is part of a group of five buildings at The Cross and the start of Eglinton Street that benefited from substantial repair and restoration work as part of a Townscape Heritage Initiative, finished in 2003. The buildings are situated in the mediaeval heart of the town, near the separately listed Old Parish Church which dates from the 16th century. The restoration project included applying a traditionally coloured lime render and choosing a cream colour for the window frame paintwork. The building is marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1858.
