Description

This is an early 19th-century, two-story villa located in Beith. It is built in an L-shape, originally with three bays, and occupies a prominent position within the town, visible from the central Cross. Initially, Braehead was a row of villas and cottages, but many have since been demolished, making this building a vital surviving feature of the area.

The front facade features a central porch with Doric columns and a pediment, containing a modern door within a moulded architrave. A blind window sits on the first floor above the porch. The exterior is now harled with painted window margins, an eaves band, and angle margins; a moulded eaves cornice runs along the top. A blank gable faces southwest, and a ground-floor window has been blocked on the northwest gable. The rear of the building is constructed of limewashed sandstone rubble with painted, droved ashlar margins.

The rear elevation has three bays. A projecting bay incorporates a narrow slit window on the ground floor and a single window above to the right; a stair window is centrally positioned. A first-floor window is to the left, with a later single-story brick addition attached to the ground floor on the left side. A fragment of a wall relating to a long-demolished adjacent building is visible at the extreme left.

The villa has been altered over time; the original UPVC windows are currently boarded up, and non-traditional concrete tiles have replaced the original slate roof. Replaced gable stacks and cans were installed around 1985, and replica chimneystacks, not in original dimensions or materials, were added during the same year. The interior was not inspected in 2003.

In 1980, the building still possessed a slate roof and straight skews. It is currently empty and semi-derelict but is awaiting restoration. The building is marked on the 1858 Ordnance Survey map.
