Description
This is a three-storey building dating to the later 19th century, situated on a corner plot at the junction of Eglinton Street and The Strand in Beith. It has a wide single bay facing Eglinton Street and three bays facing The Strand. The ground floor features shopfronts, including a corner entrance, and modern plate glass windows. There are two entrances on The Strand and one on Eglinton Street. The windows on Eglinton Street are arranged in pairs, while those on The Strand consist of single windows flanked by paired windows. The first floor windows on The Strand are paired and topped with bracketed cornices. A cornice and blocking course run along the top of the building, and two wallhead stacks are visible on the Eglinton Street elevation, connected by a balustrade. The exterior is finished in painted ashlar.
The building originally had a flat roof, which was formerly a drying area enclosed by iron railings, although these have been lost. Modern timber tilt-and-turn windows, designed to resemble traditional timber sash and case windows with four panes, have replaced the original windows.
The interior was not inspected in 2003.
The building forms a group with numbers 5, 7, 9, 2 and 12 The Strand. It is listed for its prominent corner location at the bottom of The Strand in the town centre, and its distinctive chimneystack. A photograph suggests that a single window at first floor level on the Strand elevation was added later. The building appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1897.
