Description

The structure is a late 16th century building with remodelling in the mid-18th century, evidenced by date stones of 1593 and 1754 set into the south gable. It originally served as the old parish church, but was truncated in the early 19th century when a new church, the High Church, was built. The truncated section now functions as a mausoleum, incorporating a square-plan vault with a blocked, bolection-moulded doorpiece and saw-tooth skews. The building is situated within a burial ground that includes interesting early 18th century tombstones and is bounded by a rubble boundary wall.

The old parish church section has a central, square-headed, roll-moulded doorway on the gable, with a timber-boarded door. Two round-headed windows with plain leaded glazing are located on the first floor. A clock dating to circa 1794 sits above the doorway, and a small, square bellcote from circa 1850 crowns the structure. The bell itself dates to 1614 and was refound in 1734. Tombstones are set into and against the walls on three sides. The building is constructed of rubble sandstone with dressed margins, and has a pitched roof covered in grey slates, with a stone ridge.

The interior of the mausoleum belongs to the Cochran-Patrick family. The vault itself features a simple doorway on the west elevation, flanked by slit windows. Tombstones are set against the walls, and the roof is stone slabbed.

The building occupies the site of a pre-Reformation chapel known as the Auld Kirk. The burial ground provides a green space in the centre of Beith and contains early 18th century tombstones, alongside decorative 19th century examples including memorial stones for the Spier family carved in white marble in a high Gothic style. Sections of the boundary wall to the north have collapsed, and some tombstones are deteriorating. The site is marked on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of 1858.
