Description

This is a mid-19th century house, restored in 2003. It is two storeys and an attic, originally with three bays, but later adapted with shops on the ground floor. A narrow pend is set into the left side. The first floor has three windows, spaced irregularly. Two dormers with a piend-roof were re-introduced in 2003. The front is constructed of polished sandstone ashlar with raised cills, and a cornice above the shopfronts.

The rear elevation has a projecting square stair tower, which is harled with exposed margins. Replacement timber sash and case windows with 12 panes have been installed. The roof is covered in grey slates, and there are end stacks with replacement circular clay cans. Replacement cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.

The interior was refurbished in 2003 and contains no original features.

The 2003 restoration, undertaken as part of a Townscape Heritage Initiative, reversed years of neglect and returned the building to a much better condition. The late 19th century dormers were replaced, correcting earlier unsympathetic tiling of the roof, and the sandstone was cleaned to remove layers of later paint. The window openings were carefully replicated to match the original design. This property, along with four adjoining buildings at The Cross, contributes to a diverse and impressive architectural group at the centre of Beith. The building is marked on the 1858 Ordnance Survey map.
