Description

Beith High Church is a Gothic church designed by masons John Connell and William Harvie, built between 1807 and 1810, with significant additions and alterations carried out in 1885 and comprehensive restorations between 1985 and 1993.

The church is dominated by a tall five-stage square clock tower to the north. The original early 19th-century phase is constructed of sandstone rubble with raised and droved margins. To the south, a wide gabled entrance front was added in 1885, forming a T-plan. This entrance features a central boarded door beneath an ogival head, flanking buttresses linked by a blind arcade above, and a blind quatrefoil oculus. The eastern and western gabled elevations each contain three bays. Buttressed bays sit at each re-entrant angle to the south. All windows throughout the church contain either two or three lights with geometric tracery.

The tower rises impressively with paired, louvred belfry openings in its fifth stage, topped by panelled gable finials linked by a lattice parapet. The 1885 additions are executed in squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings. Battlemented parapets and gables, distinctive cross finials to the gables, grey slate roofing, and cast-iron rainwater goods complete the external picture.

To the north, the elevation comprises three bays with a central tower and flanking recessed bays, each with traceried windows. A single-storey vestibule addition occupies a re-entrant angle to the left.

The interior contains a notable scheme of stained glass. A panelled gallery runs to three sides, supported on cast-iron columns. Within the Giffen gallery sits a decorative panel dated 1596 bearing the armorial of Robert Montgomerie and his wife Jean Campbell. The ceiling is flat, timber boarded and ribbed. Various memorials are displayed, including First and Second World War memorials. Mid-20th-century stained glass by Gordon MacWhirter Webster enhances the interior. The chancel features bog oak furniture of 1896, and a marble and onyx baptismal font also dated 1896. An organ by Harrison and Harrison, housed in a Gothic case designed by John Pollock of Victoria Works, Beith, was installed in 1885. A lectern by John McKechnie of Beithcraft dates to 1928.

The boundary is defined by tall, coped sandstone rubble walls. Chamfered, corniced gatepiers with Gothic panels and quatrefoils, topped with ball caps, frame cast-iron gates to both front and rear, which feature spearheads and vase finials.

Known as the 'visible church', Beith High Church commands views from miles around on the approach to the town, positioned at the highest point of what is the highest town in Ayrshire. It remains a focal point for the community. Inside, the church preserves memorials to prominent local families including the Montgomeries, Cochrans and Patricks. Beith's renowned furniture trade is represented through the chancel furniture and lectern. The bell in the clock tower, a gift from Robert Shedden in 1823, continues to chime and now operates electrically. The 1885 alterations extended the church and increased seating capacity to 1,254.
