Description

Rothes Glen Hotel, dated 1893, is designed in the Scottish Baronial style by Alexander Ross. This asymmetrical mansion features two storeys and an attic, with a square central tower that rises one storey above the roofline. The exterior is constructed of tooled squared rubble with tooled and polished ashlar dressings. The south entrance front has five bays, highlighted by an advanced gabled centre bay that includes a simple Neo-Jacobean doorpiece and dummy bartizans flanking the gabled first floor. The central window is adorned with cable moulded architraves and a coat of arms above, while angle side lights flank the entrance. The outer bays feature rectangular tripartite projecting windows with decorative parapets raised at the centre to accommodate a blank shield. To the right, an angle drum tower rises two storeys and is topped with a bellcast conical slated roof; to the left, there is an angled corner with a square first floor oriel.

The west garden elevation also has five bays, with rectangular projecting windows, tripartites, and bipartites. The first floor fenestration breaks the wallhead under crowstepped gablets, and a continuous stepped string course links the first floor fenestration on the south and west elevations. The east elevation is more austere, featuring a two-storey and attic design with a substantial four-storey square tower slightly set back at the southeast corner, which includes a first floor oriel. The tower has a corbelled and crenellated wallhead with cannon water spouts and an angle stair turret above the wallhead, topped with a conical roof. The building has 2-pane glazing, original rainwater goods with decorative thistle detailing, coped wallhead stacks, slate roofs, and ornate cast-iron finials.

Inside, the entrance hall features a Gothic screen that separates the staircase, which rises to a top-lit landing and is adorned with a continuous decorative cast- and wrought-iron balustrade. The dining room, located to the right, has a richly decorated coffered plaster ceiling, along with panelled doors and window shutters. The drawing room, on the left, boasts a white marble chimneypiece, a panelled surround to the window embrasures, and a strapwork design on the plaster ceiling with a decorative cornice.
