Description

The Coleburn Distillery, likely built in the late 19th century by Charles Doig, consists of a group of buildings constructed from rubble with tooled ashlar dressings, some of which have been whitewashed. The distillery complex includes a former barley drying kiln, a kiln, a tun room, a mash house, a filling store, and a malt barn.

The tall kiln features a distinctive louvred pagoda cupola. A slightly lower barley drying kiln is nearby, both buildings having ogee slated roofs. The long, two-storey, thirteen-bay malt barn projects at angles, with long, regular elevations facing roughly northwest and southeast, and a lower ground floor. It has a slate roof.

Duty-free warehouses are arranged with gabled elevations facing roughly northeast and southwest, with three bays at the gable end of warehouse number one and four bays at warehouse number two. These also have slate roofs.

The distillery office and Customs and Excise office form a single-storey, T-shaped building, with entrances to the respective offices located in the re-entrant angles. The building is gabled and has a slate roof. A long, whitewashed store, possibly a former piggery, exists, gutted internally and with a slate roof.

A single-storey, three-bay cottage features a central door, 4-pane glazing, end stacks, and a slate roof. The manager’s house, dating from the late 19th century, is a single-storey and attic structure with three bays facing southwest. It has a centre door, two canted dormers, 4-pane glazing, projecting gabled eaves, and end stacks, topped with a slate roof.

A long, whitewashed store, divided internally and with pens to the frontage, was shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1905. The distillery cottages abutting the A941 road are not included within the listed buildings.
