Description
1 Foresters' Cottages in Altyre is a two-storey range of six two-bay houses designed by John Kinross and dated 1900. The outer wings, which are advanced gabled, originally served as a bothy to the north and a laundry to the south. The building features a mix of random rubble with contrasting finely tooled and polished ashlar dressings.
The central block has paired doorways, each adorned with simple ornamentation and roll-moulding on the doorpiece, flanked by four-light windows that have a thicker centre mullion. Similar entrances are found in the north and south gables, serving houses 1 and 8, with house 1 displaying a monogrammed plaque above its entrance. The structure includes six gabled wallhead dormers, each with windows resembling those on the ground floor. The outer bays feature a pair of hoodmoulded four-light windows at house 1, while house 8 has an off-centre hoodmoulded and heavily labelled tripartite window on the ground floor, complete with carved detailing on the first-floor window lintel. The rear elevation is regular, and there is a datestone in the rear gable of house 8. The original leaded quarries remain in the casement windows, although some re-glazing has occurred in the rear of house 8, the former laundry. Substantial stacks with moulded copes rise through the roof at the rear and at the wallheads of the outer wings, topped with stone slate roofs.
Inside, the cottages feature spacious rooms with simple wooden balusters on the staircases. Shaped corbels support the joisted ceilings in the front ground floor rooms, and wrought-iron heart-shaped window fastenings are present. House 7 retains an original enamelled open hearth and cooker.
