Description
St John's Church in Deskford is a cruciform Gothic church designed by John Miller of Cullen, dated 1871. The church is oriented to the east with its entrance located in the west gable. It features harled rubble construction with tooled and polished ashlar dressings and margins. The west gable has a slightly advanced and pinnacled center bay, which includes a central entrance beneath a pointed-headed window with Y-tracery. This entrance is flanked by double-leaf plank doors fitted with ornate cast-iron hinges. Above the entrance is a large two-light window with smaller pointed-headed lights on either side, all under hoodmoulds. The church also has an apex bellcot.
The flanks of the church consist of five bays, including shallow transepts that feature large traceried windows. The north transept incorporates decorative elements such as the letter "R" and a cross. There are narrow hoodmould pointed-headed windows throughout, with lattice-pane glazing that has colored margins. The roof is slate and topped with an apex cross finial.
Inside, the church has a simple galleried interior adorned with stencilled decoration on the walls. The church is enclosed by a coped rubble wall, which is low at the west side facing the road, and topped with cast-iron spearhead railings.
