Description

Laurel Bank School, located at 121 Great George Street in Glasgow, is a Gothic church designed by James Miller between 1893 and 1894. The building features a basement and has a cruciform shape with an apsed chancel. It is constructed from snecked and stugged ashlar with polished dressings. The gabled front is accentuated by angle buttresses and octagonal turrets. A pointed arched door is set within moulded reveals that include nook shafts, with a gable above and flanking buttresses. There are two small windows on either side of the door, each with a cill course and linked hoodmoulds. Above these, a stringcourse creates a cill band for three 2-light windows, each adorned with a quatrefoil and a continuous hoodmould. The gable features a vesica and a cross.

To the right, there is a porch with flanking buttresses and an arched side door. The ground floor includes a single lancet window and a 4-light window with cusped tracery above, all beneath a lean-to roof. The basement has 4-light mullioned and transomed windows with a segmental relieving arch, while the ground floor features 3-light arched windows set within arches. The transepts are supported by angle and centre buttresses and are flanked by 2-light arched windows. The 5-sided apse has three lancets and a facetted roof, flanked by two gabled side chapels, and the building includes asymmetrical offices with an octagonal stair turret. The roofs are covered with green slate and feature straight skews.

Inside, the church has an aisleless nave and a small gallery above the vestibule. The hammerbeam room is notable, along with a single column and arches leading to the transepts. The chancel contains a central arch and two side arches, and the apse features stained glass depicting Christ flanked by Saints James and John. The basements are supported by cast-iron columns.
