Description

Knockando Parish Church dates to 1757, built on the site of an earlier church, and was repaired in 1832. Further additions and remodelling occurred between 1904 and 1906, designed by William Robertson of Elgin and John Robertson of Inverness. The church is largely harled with tooled ashlar margins and dressings.

The original design was a simple rectangular building with long north and south elevations. A four-bay aisle was added to the south front between 1904 and 1906. A pointed-headed entrance is located at the southwest in a gabled bay. A two-stage drum tower sits within the re-entrant angle, featuring a belfry in the louvred upper stage beneath a conical slate roof. The south elevation has three cusped two-light windows in the centre, and a larger traceried window breaks the wallhead in the gabled end bay. A similar two-light fenestration is present along the four-bay north elevation. An apse is situated at the east gable, with a pointed-headed entrance in the east return gable of the south aisle. A small, single-storey bowed vestry projects to the west. The building is finished with apex crosses and slate roofs.

The interior has been remodelled with Gothic detailing. The east apse houses an organ, while a richly carved communion table and pulpit include bas-relief panels. A cluster pedestal supports the pulpit, and the handrail displays Gothic detailing. The south aisle accommodates a wide gallery, with a further gallery at the west. Both galleries have cusped panelled fronts and pine pews. The roof features braced rafters. A single stained glass window by Douglas Strachan, dating to circa 1917, is located in a bay of the north wall, dedicated to the memory of Lieut L R Cumming, killed in action in 1914.

A small, early 19th-century rectangular watch house is constructed of harl pointed rubble with a doorway in the gable and a single window; it has a local slate roof. A large, irregular rubble-walled burial ground surrounds the church. The rubble walls are topped with a tooled cope, dating to 1822. A pair of carriage entrances are situated at the east, each with bullfaced rubble gatepiers and spearhead cast-iron gates. The burial ground contains mainly 19th and 20th-century tombstones. Symbol stones set against the east wall of the burial ground are designated Scheduled Monuments. The church was enlarged between 1904 and 1905 at a cost of approximately £1,000, with £500 donated by Lord Mount Stephen and Strathcona, who formerly was Donald A Smith of Dufftown, whose parents lived in Archiestown between 1841 and approximately 1860.
