Description

The Fishing Station and Ice-House at Tugnet is a late 18th century complex consisting of slightly different buildings. The courtyard square features dwellings, likely designed by John Baxter in 1772.

The main structure has a two-storey, five-bay south-facing frontage, with slightly lower, two-storey single bay wings that are set back, forming a U-shaped rear range that encloses a hollow square. The facade is made of tooled and squared rubble, with tooled rubble used elsewhere and tooled ashlar dressings. A keystoned segmental-headed pend with impost blocks leads into the inner court. The windows are regularly spaced and feature 12-pane glazing. The building has a shaped centre front wallhead stack, coped end stacks, and roofs made of Banffshire slate.

The inner court is enclosed by a two-storey U-plan range that includes dwellings, a former cooperage, stables, and stores. A forestair leads to the first floor.

The Fish House, dated 1783, is an L-plan single-storey range that abuts the west gable of the steading square, with the rear yard closed off to the north by a wall. Its irregular four-bay south front has a doorway and a blocked keystoned arch similar to that of the steading square, along with a central window. There are additional doorways on the west return elevation and a massive double wallhead stack. The glazing varies throughout the building, and it also has slate roofs.

Inside, there are two large fireplaces, each fitted with substantial iron sweys, and the roof contains wheel and hoisting tackle. The flooring is made of stone slabs.
