Danesfield House, Kirktown Of Mortlach

Danesfield is a former manse built in 1844 by Thomas Mackenzie, which incorporates earlier work. The building is asymmetrical and has two storeys with a three-bay south entrance front. It is constructed from rubble granite with tooled sandstone ashlar dressings. An advanced gabled bay is located on the left, while a square porch is situated in the re-entrant angle, featuring a diminutive dummy angle bartizan and moulded detailing. The porch includes a panelled door and a simple fanlight. On the first floor, there are two gabletted windows that break the wallhead.

The east garden front is stepped and has two bays, with ground floor canted bay windows and a single first-floor window that breaks the eaves. The glazing is mainly lying-pane, and there are batteries of two and four coped octagonal ridge and end stacks. The roof is made of local slate.

At the rear, there is a two-storey, irregular two-bay wing that is part of an earlier build. The interior features an early 19th-century nine-panel door and modern glazing, but little of interest survives overall. A simple white marble chimneypiece is present in the drawing room. Surrounding the house and garden is a coped rubble wall.
