Description
This building at 25 Main Street in Temple dates back to 1761 and consists of two traditional cottages that have been converted into one single-storey cottage. It has a rectangular plan with later additions at the rear. The exterior is made of random rubble with dressed stone details, featuring vertical quoins and raised surrounds around the windows.
The west elevation is nearly symmetrical, with replacement boarded timber doorways located in the penultimate bays on both the left and right sides. The doorway on the right has a five-pane fanlight above it and a basket-arched design with an impost detail. A tooled lintel above reads "A 1761" and features a circular carved panel in the center. The remaining bays have regular window arrangements.
The south elevation is asymmetrical, with an infilled window on the left at ground level and a small window opening slightly off-center to the left of the gable head. There is also a harled addition on the outer right side.
The east and north elevations were not visible during the 1998 inspection.
The cottage features 12-pane timber sash and case windows and is topped with a graded grey slate roof that has a lead ridge. The skews are cement faced, and there are coped gable head stacks, with the left stack made of stone and the right stack cement faced, both having circular cans. The building also has cast iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen during the 1998 inspection.
