Gibsone Of Pentland Burial Vault, Burial Ground, Pentland

The burial ground at Old Pentland dates from possibly the late 17th to early 18th century, with the oldest gravestone dating back to 1624. It features a roughly circular enclosure made of cream sandstone rubble, topped with squared rubble coping. There are later square-plan droved sandstone ashlar piers with polished copes and square caps located to the southeast, along with wrought-iron gates. Adjacent to the gates to the southeast is an 18th-century rectangular-plan sandstone rubble watch house, which has droved margins and is currently roofless. To the south, there is a burial vault of the Gibsone of Pentland aedicule type, dedicated to Thomas Hamilton and dating from around 1839. This rectangular-plan vault is constructed of droved sandstone ashlar and includes a base course, eaves course, and cornice. Each flank has two consoled and pedimented (blinded) windows, with one at the rear (north) and wrought-iron gates at the front (south). The interior features a barrel-vaulted design and a memorial tablet on the inner side of the north end wall.
