Description
Dryden Tower is a mid-19th century, three-stage, square-plan Gothic tower featuring a corbelled parapet and a northeast-facing D-plan structure at its base. The tower is constructed of ashlar sandstone with polished dressings, and it has margins around the openings. There is a cornice and blocking course between the first and second stages, as well as a cornice course between the second and third stages. The third stage has raised cills and strip quoins, along with consoled battlements topped with corbelled, octagonal pinnacles at the corners. A stone gargoyle rainwater spout was added around 2014.
The northeast elevation of the first stage has three bays, each with evenly spaced square-plan columns that have a cornice and square cap, although one cap is missing. There is a single blinded window in each bay, and the wall sections between the bays are capped with ashlar. The southwest elevation features paired slit windows on the advanced first stage of the tower, with flanking windows on the base structure, one of which is blinded.
In the second stage, there are two small square-headed windows on each face, with a small round-headed window above them set within a recessed round-headed arch. The third stage has a round-arched window with a circular window above on each face. Inside the tower, there is a turnpike stair.
