Description
The Old Windmill is a late 18th century circular tower mill with a circa 1961 two-storey, L-plan house attached. The tower mill is constructed of random rubble and has terracotta harled brick around its base, while the house is built of brick and has lead cresting along its roofline. The tower tapers towards the top.
The mill elevation features a small rectangular window to each storey on the front and right return; a single window is on the top floor adjacent to the house. The rear elevation is not visible. The house addition has a door in the centre of the ground floor, and a window to the right. A projecting bay to the left has a bipartite window above and a single window on the ground floor right, with cresting along the roofline. A recessed first floor has a single window and lead cresting. Side and rear elevations of the house are not visible.
The mill has four and eight-pane wooden sash and case windows, while the house addition has newer fixed astragalled multi-paned glazing. The windmill has a conical slate roof, and the house has a platformed flat roof. Replacement metal rainwater goods are present.
The mill's interior has been fully modernised and comprises circular rooms with some bare stone walls and curved wooden doors. The later house addition has a modern interior.
This is one of the few remaining 18th century tower grain mills in Scotland and was converted for domestic use in the earlier part of the 20th century. A small porch addition, larger windows, and chimneys were added at that time. Further conversion occurred in 1961 when a larger house addition was added by Elizabeth Adair, who was Scotland’s first lady BBC announcer and had an interest in historic buildings. She documented the conversion in a published book. The windmill is situated near Edgehead, adjacent to Windmill Wood.
