Description
159 Main Street in Pathhead is an early 18th century single-storey cottage with a rectangular plan, built of coursed, tooled sandstone. The front elevation features a central doorway with a flush margin, which has a replacement framed-and-lined door and modern door furniture. To the left of the door is a projecting horizontal stone, with flanking windows that have slightly projecting margins and an eaves course above. The left gable end displays long and short quoins.
The northwest elevation has a steeply pitched, harled and painted blank gable end, with plain stone skews and a harled and painted stack that has a pair of plain cans. There is a modern gate leading to the rear of the property.
At the rear (northeast elevation), there is a modern rectangular single-storey extension that conceals the original elevation and has heavy boards on its flat roof.
The southeast elevation features adjoining cottages with shared plain stone skews, a rubble stack, stone neck copes, and four plain cans. The front of the cottage has later two-pane timber sash and case windows that are placed close to the eaves. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with grey slate, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior was not seen in 2000.
