Description
The Gamekeeper's House in Dalkeith Policies is an earlier 19th-century classical house with a sympathetic addition from around the same time. It is a two-storey building with an L-shaped plan due to the addition on the west side, and it features a single-storey service block. The exterior is constructed of variegated ashlar stone and includes pedimented gables, a base course, an eaves cornice, and a lintel course at the first floor. The windows on the first floor are smaller and have raised margins and angle margins.
On the south elevation, the gabled wing is advanced to the right, featuring a corniced ashlar porch in the re-entrant angle with pilastered corners. The entrance door is located to the west and has a letter-box fanlight above it, along with a fanlight window to the south. The fenestration is regularly arranged, with a two-bay west return that includes a stair window above the porch on the left and a window at both the ground and first floor on the right, which is repeated on the wing to the left.
The north elevation consists of two bays, with the left bay being gabled. It has a portico with a distyle in antis at the ground floor, which is blocked with a window, and a window at the first floor. There is a blind window at both the ground and first floor in the bay of the later wing to the right. A corniced screen wall is slightly recessed to the right, with a pier that is surmounted by an urn. The corniced single-storey wing, formed behind the former screen wall to the left, is also slightly recessed to the north and south and has windows; it includes a pier to the left that is also topped with an urn.
The west elevation features a gabled bay with a window at both the ground and first floor. The east elevation has a stair window at the centre and is adjoined by a single-storey flat-roofed wing that includes a door and window facing east.
The house has small-pane glazing patterns in its sash and case windows, with ashlar wallhead stacks located to the right on the north and east sides. The roof is covered with purple-grey slates, and some original rainwater goods are still present.
