Description

These stables and coach house were built in 1740 by William Adam, with later additions and alterations. They consist of two opposing ranges of two-storey buildings forming a U-plan around a rectangular courtyard, displaying minimal classical detailing. The construction is of rubble with ashlar dressings and a prominent eaves course. Raised margins are visible throughout. Smaller windows are positioned at eaves level on the first floor.

The west range is elongated to the east. The east (courtyard) elevation has 14 bays, with a central section of four bays slightly advanced. This central section features segmental coach arches at ground level, now blocked and replaced with later openings; small windows above. A clock is located centrally below the eaves, with an ashlar bellcote rising above it, featuring louvred semicircular openings surrounded by pilasters and keystones. A large, open timber lean-to carport has been added at ground level. To the left and right of the central section are five bays each, containing a two-leaf door centrally placed. The fenestration is regular, with blind windows in the first five bays on the right side at first floor level. Four bays extend to the right return, with a later addition on the far right, containing a doorway and regular window placement. To the left return are five bays (two later), including a central doorway and regularly disposed windows. The east-facing elevations on either side are blank.

The south elevation has a chamfered corner at ground level. A large boarded door is situated on the left, with a window to the right at both ground and first floor levels. A gateway is positioned to the right, marked by corniced gatepiers; the left pier is incorporated into the wall, and the right pier is topped by an urn. A full-height lean-to brick projection has been added centrally to the west elevation, with a window to the left of centre on the first floor. The north elevation includes a ground floor window to the left, first floor windows to the left, to the left of centre and to the right, as well as a large timber addition adjoined centrally. A gateway with pyramidal capped square gatepiers, incorporated into walls, is on the left.

The east range has a west (courtyard) elevation of 23 bays. Pilastered, depressed coach arches span the four bays to the left of centre, with three now blocked and replaced with later windows. Doors are present in the fifth and ninth bays to the left of centre, and in the first, third, sixth, and ninth bays to the right of centre. The fenestration is regular, with a blank bay on the first floor in the sixth bay from the right and a blind window in the ninth from the right. A single-storey, piend-roofed wing is adjoined to the far left, with two doors centrally on the south side, flanked by windows, and a blind window to the west. The east elevation is blank, with a bowed projection at centre featuring a cat-slide roof.

The windows generally have small-pane glazing in sash and case windows, with a 12-pane configuration at ground level and 9-pane at first floor. Some casement windows are also present. Grey slates cover the piended roofs. Three brick ridge stacks are located on the west range, and one brick and three ashlar ridge stacks are on the east range. Some original rainwater goods remain, alongside good modern timber gates.
