Description

The Old Primary School, located at The Cross and Lochwinnoch Road, was built in 1873 with some later additions. It is a single-storey, roughly cruciform-plan gabled former board school featuring a tripartite window and a stone bird-cage bell-cote on the north gable. There is a gabled porch situated in the northeast re-entrant angle. The building is constructed from whinstone and sandstone random rubble, with droved sandstone ashlar dressings. Notable architectural details include a discontinuous base course, an eaves cornice, long and short quoins with raised quoin strips, and raised chamfered window margins. The south wing has paired windows with raised long and short margins. The porch has a stop-chamfered, shoulder-arched opening and a bipartite window to the left. An ashlar tablet on the east gable is inscribed "KILMACOLM SCHOOL BOARD," and there is a corniced wallhead stack above.

There is a later entrance in the southeast re-entrant angle, featuring a roll-moulded, depressed-arch architrave and a later timber porch with a slate roof. The north gable has a stone-mullioned tripartite window with a small vent above the central light, a hoodmould, and a circular vent at the gable apex, topped by a corniced bell-cote with shouldered openings. The smaller west wing has a shouldered door architrave and a window.

The windows and doors are boarded up, and the windows were likely originally timber sash and case. The building has ashlar-coped skews with plain skewputts and a decorative octagonal chimney can, all covered with graded grey slate.

Access to the interior was not possible in 2004. The boundary wall surrounding the property is made of coped random rubble, with ashlar gatepiers and the base of a Sun Foundry gas lamp on one of the gatepiers.
