Description

The Clydesdale Bank, located at 130-132 Cathcart Street in Greenock, is a bold three-storey corner building designed by James Thomson in 1899, showcasing a free Renaissance style. The building is constructed of red ashlar and features a splayed corner bay with a distyle in antis Corinthian doorpiece, granite column shafts, individual entablatures on console brackets, a coat of arms, and bridging segmental pediments. Above the doorpiece, there are single windows, with the second-floor window supported by Ionic columns.

On the Cathcart Square elevation, there are two bays, while the Cathcart Street elevation has three bays. The design includes superimposed orders and early German Renaissance pedimented bipartites with slim columnar mullions set within channelled pilasters at the ground floor. The first floor features consoled windows that bear balconies supported by Doric pilasters, and the second floor has architrave windows with panelled balconies in pilasters, coupled with Doric pilasters and inner single Ionic pilasters. The building is topped with a bold modillioned cornice and a parapet adorned with quatrefoiled circles. The Cathcart Street elevation also includes a doorpiece and a former shop at the ground floor, with architraved windows above that have cornices at the first floor, and a continuous entablature without a parapet.
