Description
The Free Church of Scotland Church was built in 1878 by Matthews and Laurie. It is a Gothic style building constructed of coursed rubble with tooled dressings. The symmetrical east gable frontage features side entrances with hoodmoulds, flanked by buttresses topped with pinnacles. A large, central, hoodmoulded two-light Gothic window with four lancets illuminates the inner vestibule, with a smaller shaped light above. An apex bellcote with cross finials sits at the gable. The flanking sides contain four bays, each lit by two-light Gothic windows. An advanced, gabled transept mirrors the east front with a large hoodmoulded window. Most windows have lattice pane glazing, and the roof is slate.
Inside, the church has a simple design with original fittings and a Gothic panelled gallery across the east end, supported by Roman Doric cast-iron columns. The spandrels of the roof trusses are decorated with cusped detailing. The building remains in ecclesiastical use and occupies a commanding site overlooking Loch Gairloch. The building was upgraded from a category C(S) to a category B on November 20, 1996.
