Description
Strathgair House is a former (Church of Scotland) parish manse, originally built in 1805. Significant additions and alterations were made in 1823, followed by further extensive repairs and possible additions in 1847. The original building was a two-storey and attic, three-bay manse with a central door facing south. In 1823, a large, two-storey, two-bay piended wing was added to the south, creating a symmetrical front and incorporating a side entrance leading to the original central door. Single-storey, single-bay wings were added to the east and west gables between 1823 and 1847, built in slightly different styles.
The house is constructed of harled rubble with contrasting painted tooled dressings. Most windows retain their original eight-pane glazing. It features corniced end and wallhead stacks, and slate roofs. Dormer windows with piended roofs may date from the 1823 alterations.
Behind the house is a large, U-plan steading, forming a courtyard. This steading is built of whitewashed rubble with a slated roof. A coped rubble walled garden is also part of the property. Advertisements for tenders relating to work on the house appeared in the Inverness Courier on May 18, 1847.
