Description
Auchindrean Bridge is a fine wrought-iron bridge, dating from approximately 1870 and designed by Sir John Fowler. It is a lenticular-truss bridge with a wooden deck suspended from the truss by lattice girders. The bridge is supported by abutments of coursed rubble, which extend upwards to form semi-circular approach piers. These piers have corbelled semi-circular caps. Sir John Fowler purchased the Inverbroom Estate in 1867. The bridge is considered "unique in Scotland" according to John Hume. Further information can be found in relation to the Corrieshalloc Gorge suspension bridge in Gairloch parish. Details are provided in Thomas Mackay’s The Life of Sir John Fowler (1900), Macdonald’s Transactions Highland and Agricultural Society (1877), and John Hume’s The Industrial Archaeology of Scotland (1977).
