Description
Auldearn Parish Church, dated 1757, was built to replace a medieval church, of which part remains to the east.
The church underwent alterations by John Robertson of Inverness in 1898. It features harled walls with ashlar margins and dressings. The symmetrical south elevation has eight bays, with round-headed keystoned entrances in the outer bays and similarly detailed windows. The windows are large in bays three and six and small in the remaining bays, all with impost blocks. A datestone is located in the center, along with a mural monument from 1650. The north elevation has four large windows from 1898, matching the detailing of the south elevation, and all windows feature simple circle tracery from 1898. There are round-headed gallery windows in the east and west gables, and a bellcote for two bells at the apex of the west gable, topped with a slate roof.
Inside, the church was re-cast and refurbished in 1898 in a Gothic style. It includes a panelled bowed pulpit and a panelled reredos at the southwest, enclosed by a low screen. The east features a serpentine panelled gallery front, and the ceiling braces have cusped tracery.
The burial ground is surrounded by rubble walls. To the west, there is a pair of late 19th-century tooled ashlar square gatepiers with Gothic detailing, along with a pair of decorative cast iron carriage gates. The site contains various tombstones from the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.
Near the southwest entrance of the church stands a circular ashlar sundial on a squat circular rubble plinth.
