Description
The Smigel Mill is a simple rectangular mill dating to around 1850. It was built as a co-operative venture. The building is constructed of harl-pointed rubble with tooled rubble dressings. The west frontage has four bays, with an off-centre door and one window on each floor in the two bays to the right. A kiln adjoins the mill to the left, featuring a small first-floor window on both the front and rear elevations. A loft door is centrally located at the rear, rising through the wallhead into a piended gablet. Flat skews and shaped apex finials are present, and the roof is covered with graded Caithness slate, featuring a stone ridge and a simple ridge kiln vent. An overshot wooden and iron water wheel is situated at the south gable. The mill was de-scheduled on 5th November 2003, and the lade has been turfed over. Further details can be found in John Hume’s The Industrial Archaeology of Scotland, volume 2, published in 1977, page 316.
