Description
No. 3, The Smiddy in Ferness is part of a row of six cottages built in the mid 19th century. These single-storey and attic cottages face east and feature three bays. They are constructed from rubble with tooled rubble dressings. Each cottage has a central door and piended dormers in the outer bays, with mainly four-pane glazing. The cottages have coped end stacks and slate roofs.
No. 1 has a former additional door in the right bay that has been converted into a window. No. 3, known as Smiddy Cottage, was originally a smiddy located at the rear, which has been converted into extra living space by J. & W. Wittet in 1953.
