Description
The graveyard surrounding Kilmuir Church dates back to the site of a former 16th-century parish church and is enclosed by a simple stone and lime wall built in 1832. Within the graveyard are various burial enclosures, including one belonging to the Maclean family, which features a moulded and lugged doorpiece dated 1793. A monument to Flora Macdonald, created by D Davidson of Inverness, was erected in 1861 over her tomb, following instructions from her great-grandson, Captain John Macleod. The tomb was originally within the Macdonalds of Kingsborough enclosure. There are also two late medieval carved tomb slabs, one depicting the effigy of a knight. Two of the medieval tomb slabs are designated as Scheduled Monuments. Information regarding the graveyard is documented in the New Statistical Account and the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland inventory of 1914.
