Description
The site encompasses the graveyard surrounding the former parish church of Kilmuir, Skye, which dates back to the 16th century. The graveyard is enclosed by a simple stone and lime wall built in 1832. Within the graveyard are various burial enclosures, including one belonging to the Maclean family, marked by a doorpiece dated 1793. A monument to Flora Macdonald, erected in 1861 by D Davidson of Inverness, stands over her tomb. The monument was built at the instruction of Captain John Macleod, her great-grandson. Two late medieval carved stone slabs are present, one featuring an effigy of a knight. The tomb of Flora Macdonald was originally part of the burial enclosure of the Macdonalds of Kingsborough. Two mediaeval tomb slabs are designated as Scheduled Monuments. Details regarding the site can be found in the New Statistical Account and the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments in Scotland inventory of 1914.
