Description

Stoneyfield House is a circa 1790 house. Around 1820, a symmetrical dwelling of similar size was added to the front, creating a double-pile house over a raised basement. The exterior is white harled with white painted tooled ashlar margins and dressings.

The south front features a central doorway reached by steps that overhang the raised basement. The doorway is framed by a corniced portico supported by paired Roman Doric columns with ribbed bases, and flanked by pilaster strips. Above the door is a radial fanlight and a double-leaf panelled door, partially glazed. Tall windows are positioned on both the ground and first floors. The centre first-floor window has a corniced top with ribbed pilaster jambs and ribbed detailing to the lintel. The fenestration is regular, with return gables. The rear elevation has three bays and a gabled projecting central wing, with a single, centrally located canted bay window. Most windows contain 12 panes of glass. The roof is slate-covered, with panelled end stacks.

Inside, the front staircase has slender cast-iron balusters with palmette detailing. The rear staircase has turned wooden balusters. The front public rooms on both sides of the entrance feature re-used white marble chimney pieces, originally from the demolished Balmacaan House near Drumnadochit on Loch Ness.
