Cameron Barracks, Perth Road, Inverness

Cameron Barracks, located on Perth Road in Inverness, was built between 1876 and 1884 by the Royal Engineers' Office in a baronial style. The complex consists of four two-storey blocks that enclose three sides of a parade ground. The east block features 18 bays, with two bays at each end and four central bays that are advanced and topped with a crowstep gable, which includes twin gables at the center. The north-east block has 16 bays, with two advanced bays at each end and a clock tower that is asymmetrical, positioned above the two central bays. The north-west and west blocks each contain 19 bays, with twin conical-roofed drum towers at the center connected by a balcony above a round-arched entrance on the ground floor. These blocks display a strong machicolated feature above the second floor. In the outer ranges, alternate first-floor windows have crowstep-gabled dormer heads, and asymmetrically placed battered chimneystacks rise from the front. Small circular conical-roofed towers are located at the corners. Additionally, there is a square-plan entrance tower at the main gateway in the north-east corner.
