Description
The Church of Scotland parish church at Cannich dates to around 1900 and was designed by John Robertson of Inverness. The rectangular building is oriented east to west and constructed of rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. A gabled porch projects from the southwest side, featuring a pointed-head entrance with roll-moulded ashlar margins, as do all the windows. A large pointed-head window occupies the east gable, and three smaller, similarly styled windows are set into the south elevation, all featuring simple three-light tracery and leaded-pane glazing. The building has a deep base course, apex finials, a slate roof with projecting eaves, and a red tiled ridge.
The interior is simple, with a braced timber roof displaying cusped detailing and a pine plank ceiling. A panelled pulpit also features cusped detailing.
The church remains in ecclesiastical use and is considered a good example of John Robertson’s rural church designs, attributed to him on stylistic grounds.
