Description
The Dovecot at Ackergill Tower is an early 18th century structure featuring a pair of large harled rubble dovecotes that are symmetrically positioned in front of the tower. Both dovecotes face south and have high north walls with paired doorways. The south wall includes paired windows below the wallhead, and there are two rat ledges that step up at the gables, which are adorned with crowsteps. The roofs are steeply pitched and covered with Caithness slate.
The east cote is a double-chambered dovecote, containing 900 stone nesting boxes, each individually plastered at the rear. The paired front windows have been blocked, and there are two large, ruinous skylights that likely replaced former dormered or swept flightholes.
The west cote has one blocked rear door and shows no evidence of nesting boxes inside. Remnants of rough joisting suggest there was once a first floor, and a fireplace with a mural flue is located in the north wall at the first floor level. The building is currently in poor condition.
