Description
Ackergill Mains is a large farmstead consisting of two distinct ranges.
The west range dates from the earlier to mid-19th century and is a long, two-storey structure with eight bays. It features six high, regularly spaced basket-arched cart bays on the east elevation, with glazed loft windows above. There are also some small loft vents near the wallhead on the west elevation. A tall, tapering circular brick chimney, which may have been added later, rises from the wallhead plinth at the south end of the west elevation. The roof is covered with slate and includes skylights. Additionally, there is a long single-storey addition at the south gable.
The east range, built in the mid to later 19th century, is a two-storey, L-plan structure that includes a boiler house and chimney in the northeast re-entrant angle. A tall, circular brick chimney with a flared top rises from a square rubble plinth. There are loft doors in the north and east gables, and the wallhead breaks into a piended gable on the east elevation. The roofs of this range are also slate.
