Waverley Hotel, 4-8 High Street, Nairn

The Waverley Hotel, located at 14 High Street in Nairn, was built in 1877 and designed in the style of Matthews and Laurie from Inverness. This three-storey building with an attic features an eight-bay classical facade. The exterior is made of finely stugged coursed rubble with polished ashlar dressings.

The central two bays project slightly at the first and second floors, culminating in a gabled pediment adorned with a scrolled crest and antefixae. The outer bays contain doors, which have been glazed as windows, and feature stilted heads with bracketed cornices that support a balustrade above the outer first-floor window.

All first-floor windows are architraved and corniced, complete with apron panels. The two central and outer windows are embellished with enriched shell pediments, and all are connected by a band course with guilloche moulding. The second-floor windows have lugged architraves and bracketed cills, with the two central windows featuring segmental pediments.

Additional architectural details include cast-iron bracket rhones, four modern box dormers, corniced stacks, and a slate roof. The ground floor has modern shop facades, and there is an arched entrance leading to a side passage.
