Description

The Old Fish Market, located on South Quay at Harbour Quay in Wick, is a late 19th-century building. It is a shallow, single-storey shed with a long rectangular plan, featuring a canopied platform facing the harbour. The exterior is made of vertically boarded timber with a painted dado. There are 12 regularly spaced openings on the harbour side, with doors in bays 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 from the left, each flanked by a window in the remaining bays, although these windows are now blocked. Above the door to the left of the centre, there is a glazed recess containing a clock, which has a timber case with Roman numerals and was made by a London manufacturer. The canopied area has three bays, with the canopy supported by cast-iron columns that have moulded bases and capitals, along with decorative, fretted iron brackets supporting the eaves and a boarded soffit. The roof is piended and covered with corrugated iron. Inside, the market is lined with timber boarding and features bracketed shelves and recesses.
