Description
This is a late 19th-century gate lodge, built in an L-plan with a single storey set above a raised basement. It is constructed of rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. A distinctive feature is the semi-circular porch in the re-entrant angle, which rises as a round tower with a conical, bellcast roof topped with a finial. A shallow rectangular bay window is situated at the north-east gable, facing the road. The south-east elevation has paired windows with deeply chamfered jambs, featuring 12-pane glazing. Corniced end stacks and a slate roof complete the exterior.
Two pairs of square ashlar gate piers, with chamfered angles, moulded cornices, and apex ball finials, mark the carriage and pedestrian entrances. Low, coped rubble quadrants with cast-iron spearhead railings run between the piers, with matching pairs of pedestrian and carriage gates. A mural stone shield, initialled "S" for Sinclair of Dunbeath, is set above the bay window. The lodge appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1871.
