Description

Rosskeen Parish Church was designed by James Smith and built between 1830 and 1832, with alterations and repairs made by Andrew Maitland in 1853. The church is rectangular in shape, constructed from harl pointed rubble with ashlar dressings.

At the center of the church is a square projecting tower featuring round-headed windows on the ground floor and a side entrance for the Minister. The tower has chamfered angles at the second stage with blind occuli, and it culminates in an octagonal belfry at the third stage, which rises above the church wallhead. This belfry includes round-headed louvred vents and is topped with a leaded dome and a wind vane. The tower is flanked by two large, long round-headed windows that have substantial semi-circular upper lights and tripartite designs with narrow side lights. The church displays symmetrical fenestration on its north, east, and west elevations, featuring small segmental-headed windows with multi-pane glazing. There are two windows in the ground floor and gallery outer bays on the north and south elevations, and three similarly placed on the east and west flanks, some of which are blind.

The church has center projecting piended porches on the north, east, and west elevations, and a piended platform slate roof.

Inside, there is a five-sided panelled gallery supported by fluted cast-iron columns, along with original fittings, a pulpit, and a sounding board.

The burial ground is enclosed by a coped rubble wall, with some spearhead cast-iron railings and gates, and a mounting block at the entrance. There are various burial enclosures, including one with a dated lintel from 1675 and a portion of stone window tracery, as well as tombs from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.
